Mati - Evil eye bracelets

The evil eye, “mati” (μάτι) in Greek culture, is an important piece of jewelry to wear somewhere on your body to ward off negative energy, evil spirits, and for protection.  This piece of jewellery can come in many forms, an evil eye mati bracelet, charm, necklace or pin.

Mataki: its history through time.

The most widespread amulet used today in Greece but is also prevalent in other countries. The well-known eye μάτι which has variations but tends to be in the form of a circle divided into three colors. Its outer circular side has a cobalt blue tint, with the intermediate isopachous concentric part of white, while its center consists of a small black circle representing the pupil of the eye.

But what does this eye protect us from? The interpretation given to this question is that it provides protection to us by repelling the emitted malicious negative energy of third parties. This malevolent energy is produced by hatred or simply by envy and has the ability to cause us many evils, small or big.

The ancient Greeks, however, were the ones who recreated the whole theory about the evil eye.

Now in modern Greece, if you hear someone say “oh what a beautiful baby!!!”, it will be followed by the mother’s immediate reaction to these words not to harm the child in any way.  This is done with the phrase of the spitting woman “ptou, ptou, ptou”.
